What year are you?

I can’t agree more with this. I have hit a point in my PhD where I feel like it’s been forever. Asking “What year are you?” is as good as asking “Nearly finishing, aren’t you?”, simply because your friend recalls that you’ve started your PhD since forever.

Well, if you go by the year I started, it’s been 1.5 years. If you go by the year I started on research, it’s only been 0.5 years (because last year was all coursework). But, if you go by the duration of the scholarship (3 years, with a maximum extension of 0.5 years), I need to be nearly there.

So, be smart, shut up and don’t ask.
